Healthy Child Uganda

Donations to Healthy Child Uganda (HCU) through Healthy Generations have made a difference in the lives of Ugandan babies, children, adolescents and health providers for more than two decades!  In return, Canadian pediatricians learn from colleagues, communities, and families in rural Uganda.

HCU started in 2003 and was a Ugandan idea to meet the needs of their community and nearby Mbarara University of Science and Technology.  With help from their supporters in the community and in Canada, HCU promotes maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health in Southwest Uganda.

The CPS is a core HCU partner, providing technical support, advocacy and funds raised through Healthy Generations. Through HCU, many thousands of volunteer community health workers, clinicians, teachers, health managers, and political and community leaders have been supported through training and tools and to be difference-makers in health.  The program has reached more than a million people.

Funding through Healthy Generations supports emerging opportunities and needs. For example, in recent years, donations enabled provision of critical PPE and radio announcements during the pandemic, ‘refresher’ training sessions for volunteer community health workers, continuing medical education for nurses and medical doctors, critical equipment for health facilities, nutritional supplements for malnourished and neglected children, medical treatment for special needs children, and more.

Healthy Generations-funded activities piggy-back on existing programming, infrastructure, and external grants at HCU's partner institution in Uganda (Mbarara University of Science and Technology). An experienced field team ensures funds are directed to highest priority activities and emerging opportunities; oversight is provided in-kind by University of Calgary managers.

Thanks to Canadian contributors through Healthy Generations for supporting a bright future for babies, children and adolescents in Uganda.
